Bamboo Crafts Chinami Hashimoto
AOMONO-ZAIKU, a bamboo craft that makes the most of the simplicity of bamboo, in a town of Hojo at the foot of Mt. Tsukuba.
橋本さんが作るのは、竹本来の素朴さを活かす、青物という竹細工。
裏山から竹を取ってすぐに作れる、土着的な道具だ。
生命力に溢れ、真っ直ぐに伸びる青竹はどのようにその姿を変えていくのだろう。
橋本さんとまず向かったのは筑波山麓の街、北条の高台にある竹林。
ほどよく人の手が入っている竹林は歩きやすい。風が通り抜けていくのを感じる。
差し込んでくる光を見上げた先には、高く、さらさらと揺れる竹の葉。木漏れ日が美しく幹に落ちる。
橋本さんが足を止めた。
「これが良いかも。」
柔らかさも粘りもほどよい、３〜４年目くらいの竹。
慣れた手つきで軽やかに竹を倒し、使える部分を小気味よく切り分けていく。
切った竹からは根が吸い上げた水が滴っていた。
Hashimoto creates bamboo crafts called “AOMONO-ZAIKU” that brings out the rusticity of bamboo.
She wants to make indigenous tools that could be made quickly with bamboo taken from the woods.
How the green bamboo, which is full of vitality and grows straight, would change its form ?
To start with, Hashimoto and I headed for a bamboo grove on the hill in Hojo, a town at the foot of Mt. Tsukuba.
The bamboo grove, which has been well taken care of, is easy to walk through. I felt the wind nicely going through there.
Looking up high, I saw swaying bamboo leaves up there. The sunlight filtering through the trees beautifully falls on the trunks.
Then Hashimoto stopped and said
“This would be good.”
The bamboo was about three or four years old, with just the right amount of softness and tenacity.
Skillfully, she felled the bamboo lightly and cut the usable parts into small pieces.
The water absorbed by the roots was trickling from the bamboo.
工房では、竹を割ってヒゴを作る。
竹は縦に繊維が走っているので、真ん中でないと綺麗に割れない。割り箸と同じ原理だ。
ヒゴにはその竹の皮の部分を使う。皮に近いほど繊維が詰まっているので強い。しなやかに曲がる竹の強さの秘密はそこにある。
竹包丁の響き。竹を割いていく時の軽やかな音。その度に感じる竹の香り。
ほどよく頭と手を使うのは心地よく、竹を割っているときは瞑想しているような感覚にもなるという。
In her workshop, the bamboo is split to make “higo”.
Bamboo has fibers running vertically, so it has to be split right in the middle. This is just like splitting the disposable wooden chopsticks.
The bark of the bamboo is used for “higo”. The closer to the skin, the stronger the bamboo is because of the high density of fibers. This is the secret of bamboo’s flexibility and strength.”
手の感覚で厚さを測りながら皮を剥ぐ。竹は丈夫そうに見えても、どこでも割れたり切れてしまったりするから、常に手で調整しながら竹を割いていく。そうしてできあがるヒゴが竹細工の命だ。
印象的な言葉があった。
「竹を常に感じています。もう竹の香りもわからないくらい、感じるまでもないくらいの存在になっているのかも。」
「ずっと、そしていつでも作っていたかった。自然物で造形物を作る、その感覚が好き。」
青竹は人の手に触れ、形を変え、道具となる。そして人々の生活に長く寄り添っていく。
She peels the skin by measuring the thickness with her hands. Bamboo may look sturdy, but it can split or break anywhere, so she constantly adjusts by hand when splitting. The resulting higo is the life of bamboo crafts.

“I always feel bamboo. I don’t even smell the bamboo anymore, as it is always with me.”
“I always have, and I still want to make it. I love creating formed objects with something from nature.”
Aotake, green bamboo changes its form when touched by human hands, and becomes a tool for their lives.
Then it will stay with us everyday, for a long time.
